We’re getting to that time of year when we start thinking about Spring and Summer… and along with that, we start thinking about the dreaded swimsuit season. And then starts that inner conversation.
We tell ourselves things like...
“This time, I’m really going to start watching what I eat.”
Or “I’m just going to go on a major diet!”
But HOLD UP — wait just 1 second and ask yourself this:
Has that EVER really worked for you in the past? Like, for real?
Have you ever achieved your dream body or goal weight by watching your diet for a few months? More importantly, have you been HAPPY while doing it? I’m going to go with: NO.
I’m not trying to discourage you — I’m all about empowering and encouraging other women! But sometimes we all need a little #RealTalk to help us change our mindset and our habits.
As a Health Coach I’ve seen it all:
Quick-fix fad diets.
And. It. Never. Works.
At least, not in the long-term — you could actually be doing more harm than good. And to top it off, life basically SUCKS the entire time!
You’re not enjoying food when you’re eating like a rabbit. You have zero energy. And, next thing you know, Summer is here and you’re disappointed with the results.
That’s not how life should be. I’m here to tell you that it DOESN’T have to be that way.
You CAN lose weight and you CAN feel confident and healthy while enjoying life!
You just need a little consistency in your nutrition and exercise. When you have a plan, when you actually follow it and learn from it. When you make it a part of your daily life, and not a chore — that’s when everything changes. And that motivation? Watch how motivated you get when you really start to see and feel your results!
Now, on to some real advice…
If you’re serious about losing weight, getting fit, and making a real change in your life, here’s my best advice. What worked for ME and so many of my clients.
Step 1: Change your mindset.
Everything starts with your mindset — if you’re in it for the wrong reasons, you’ll never stay committed. You’ll never be happy with what you’re doing. Ask yourself “why.”
Why is this so important to you?
Why are you making this change?
Why do you want to lose weight or be fit?
Is it simply to feel more confident? Do need more energy to get through the day? Are you trying to prevent future health issues or improve current ones? Is it so you can keep up with your kids? Or maybe to be an example to them so that they too can start healthy habits?
We all have different reasons, but it’s those reasons that will push you to stay consistent even when you feel like quitting.
Step 2: Find a way to keep yourself accountable.
Accountability is key. For me, accountability comes from knowing that others are watching me and counting on me. My kids. My clients. My friends.
But if you need more accountability, try one of these:
- Share your journey (struggles and all) on social media
- Ask a friend to do it with you
- If you have older kids, invite them to join you
- Find a group of others on the same journey
I actually host monthly challenge groups where myself and a bunch of my clients band together in a private Facebook group to share our journey and keep each other accountable! I mainly do this to help my clients, but honestly, it’s helped me tremendously, too!
Step 3: Have a plan and stick with it.
This is the most important step! “Watching what you eat” isn’t a plan. “Going to the gym” isn’t a plan.
Without a proper plan, it’s so easy to fall off track and step back into old habits.
You need a plan that’s detailed.
All laid out for you.
With zero guesswork.
So, for nutrition: I’m talking planning out balanced meals (no, carbs should NOT be taken out of your diet) and creating a meal plan that you’ll actually ENJOY following so you won’t be tempted to stray off plan. Sure, this might mean 1-2 hours out of your week to actually meal prep and plan, but it’s all so worth it.
Are you a busy mom that tends fall back on drive-thrus all the time? No problem! How have you looked at your local grocery store’s freshly made meals? A rotisserie chicken is quick and easy to share with the entire family.
And exercise? What days do you plan on working out? Look at your calendar a put aside your workout time like it’s the most important appointment of your day. Know exactly which days you’re going to be working out and what you’ll be doing each day. And running on the treadmill or elliptical each day isn’t going to cut it — throw in some weights, too! If weight-training scares you, start lifting weights in the comfort of your own home, even just 5-10 pound weights will make a difference in your strength & weight loss.
This is where Beachbody On Demand comes in handy for me.
There’s no “gymtimidation” because I’ve basically got an entire squad of at-home personal trainers at my fingertips. Dozens of programs with easy-to-follow workouts and calendars. Oh, and each program comes with it’s own tailored meal plan — so easy!
So, what are you waiting for?
Is this going to be your year! Are you going to make it different? Are you ready for a REAL change? Are you ready to put those excuses and stories aside and finally start seeing results?
THEN DO IT!
COMMIT TO IT!
Start planning today, and don’t let anyone or anything get in your way.
I believe in you.
