Who doesn’t love a good vacation?! We need them every once in a while, right? I’d definitely go insane without a vacation at least once a year. But it’s just not always possible. Vacations take time and money… things you may have used up by the times the holidays roll around, even with you and the kids with time off. So why not plan a STAYcation? A vacation without leaving your own town — without even booking 1 night at a hotel! Now that’s totally something that’s doable for everyone!
Not sure what to do? Here are some great staycation ideas and activities to try — great for kids, teenagers, or just you and your hubby!
7 Affordable Staycation Ideas (For Families & Couples)
Go on a Picture Scavenger Hunt
If you have a group of people, break up into 2 or more teams and head out to a fun location (a park, mall, downtown, etc.). Give your teams 1 hour to take pictures with as many things on the list as possible! You can create your own scavenger hunt list or hop on Google and you can find pre-made lists. This is great for kids and adults alike!
Create Your Own Culinary Biking Tour
If the weather is nice, a bike food tour can be a blast! Hop on your bikes and work up an appetite, biking to an area nearby with delicious restaurants. Visit 2–4 different restaurants to indulge in each course — appetizers, dinner, drinks, desserts. If you’re lucky enough to live near a few breweries or wineries you could easily turn it into a beer or wine tour! Just make sure you don’t drink too much, you still have to make it home on your bike!
Spend the Day Outdoors
Get some fresh air and plan a fun-filled day outdoors. Pack a picnic (and a few snacks for good measure), and head out! Go to the beach for the day, take a canoeing trip, or find a local park that offers lots of trails for hiking. Try Geocaching and spend the day searching for hidden treasures!
Try a Fun Fitness Class
Vacation and fitness aren’t normally 2 words that go together, but there are SO MANY fun fitness classes out there! Try kickboxing or zumba or something more unique like aerial yoga, fitness drumming, or a kangoo class. (If you haven’t heard of any of those, you MUST look them up!)
Or even better, if you have a Beachbody On Demand subscription, you have access to super fun programs like Country Heat (country music dance workout), Cize (hip-hop dance program), 22 Minute Hard Corps (bootcamp style fitness), Double Time (a fun partner workout), and so many others! You can even sign up for a 14-day free trial to use for your staycation!
Play Tourist in Your Own Town
That boat you’ve seen out on the weekends? The art or science museum you drive past every day but have never been into? The zoo in the next city over? The historic district on the other side of town? Go play tourist and do all those little things that your town has to offer!
Again, depending on the weather, this can be so much fun for kids! Head to Walmart and get a couple of small tents (they’re fairly inexpensive), stock up on s’mores ingredients, and create your own little camping staycation fun in your backyard!
Don't have a big enough (or private enough) backyard? Do a little research into local campgrounds!
Become a Chef for a Night
Find a fancy AF recipe online, splurge on good high-quality ingredients, pick up a nice bottle of wine (try searching perfect wine pairing for the recipe you’ll be making), and play chef! Make a meal you’ve always wanted to try or something you’ve had saved on Pinterest for ages, but just haven’t gotten around to yet.
There are so many ways to “get away” without even going more than 5 miles from home — it just takes a little creativity?
